For years there has been a tremendous amount of unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). Many innocent people have lost their lives or some of their family. In the midst of this unrest God’s Word is changing lives and bringing inner peace. In Kasumbalesa, a Gideon was coming out of a church meeting very late at night. Soldiers who were patrolling arrested him and they began harassing him. One of the soldiers discovered that this man had a New Testament placed by the Gideons in his pocket. “What is this?” he asked. Brother Kasambwe responded, “It is a New Testament.” “Ah! I cannot miss this opportunity, I have been looking for this small book for a long, long time and I just got this one. You may quietly and quickly go back to your house safely.”
On another occasion, the rebels were entering the suburbs of Kinshasna. There was one soldier of the national army who had received a New Testament during a distribution by The Gideons. Before being executed by the rebels, this soldier had opened his New Testament and aſt er reading he shouted, “Oh God please protect me as you promised in this book!” Aſt er the rebels heard this, they began laughing at him. “You are joking, in just a few minutes you will be perished,” they said. The rebels began shooting and all of the soldiers were gunned down. A troop of the national army came and ran the rebels off . As they were taking care of the slain soldiers, they were surprised to see an arm raise up and heard a voice saying, “Me, I am alive! I am not dead!” As the soldiers began helping him, they noticed a bullet only slightly wounded his nose. They took him to the hospital where he received attention and was released.
