In Acts 20:35, the Lord Jesus Himself said:
“…It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
I’ve experienced this myself continuously during my time with The Gideons. One such example was when we did a placement one Monday morning at Frances Vorwerg School a few years ago.
Frances Vorwerg is a school for disabled children and children with severe learning difficulties. It was my first visit to this school so I was a little unsure of what to expect. However, the placement went mostly like any other school placement, with the difference that when you stand on the stage during assembly and address the children, there is a long row of children in wheelchairs sitting in front of you.
After the assembly, the Grade 8 learners stayed behind to receive their Bibles. One of these children, in a wheelchair, came to us and started talking to me, with great difficulty.
He first told me that his name is Duncan. Then he told me that the Bible is his favourite Book and that John 3:16 is his favourite verse. He then asked me if he could please pray for us.
We stood in a circle around him and he prayed for us. It was a very moving experience for me and made me realise again how blessed we are to do the Lord’s work. This boy would give anything to get out of that wheelchair and go out to put a Bible in someone’s hand. It made me realise that I need to stop making excuses.
