As the 2012 Olympic Summer Games draw to a close, we’d like to share the testimony of one Olympic gold medallist who came to faith in Jesus Christ as the result of a Bible placed through The Gideons International.
Kelly Clark grew up in the mountain town of Mt. Snow, Vermont – an appropriate name for the town where this young girl would develop a passion for snowboarding.
In a February 2010 article by Tim Ellsworth for Baptist Press, Kelly told of her life-changing encounter with God’s Word. Kelly had already achieved the kind of success any athlete would envy–an Olympic gold medal, fame and money. Alone in her hotel room in 2004, she thought about her success and how empty it felt.
The next day, Kelly overheard one of her snowboarding competitors reassuring another competitor who had failed to qualify
qualify that it was okay, and that, “God still loved her.” The statement stuck with Kelly, and she returned to her hotel room and opened up a Bible placed there by The Gideons International.
Through that Scripture, God spoke to Kelly’s heart. She continued investigating Christ’s claims and within a few weeks, Kelly Clark received Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Saviour.
“It ended up freeing up my snowboarding more so than ever,” Clark told Ellsworth in the 2010 interview. “I was no longer going from event to event to feel good about myself. I had that apart from what I did. And so my snowboarding has been dramatically impacted. My snowboarding got a lot more free.”
In January of 2012, the three-time Olympian won her fourth Super Pipe gold in ESPN’s Winter X Games, earning her the title, “the greatest snowboard half pipe rider in history,” by ESPN. During her TV interview following her victorious ride, Kelly stood grasping her snowboard covered with sponsor logos. And in white type written across the top of that snowboard, one name stuck out at the top as the name above all names – “J-E-S-U-S.”
We praise God for Kelly’s testimony. And we thank our members, donors and other supporters who make it possible to place Scriptures throughout the world so that more men, women, boys and girls can come to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.
