All Gideons uphold the following core beliefs:
- The Bible is the inspired, eternal and infallible Word of God.
- The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God.
All Gideons must also:
- Have received Jesus as their personal Saviour.
- Endeavour to follow Him in their daily lives.
- Be members in good standing in any Protestant or Evangelical church.
- The Gideons spread the Word of God in more than 199 countries.
- Since the Gideons was established in South Africa in 1950, more than 45 million Bibles have been placed.
- Worldwide, more than 2.7 billion Bibles have been placed since 1908.
We do not provide Bibles or New Testaments to individuals, our church partners or any other organisation for their distribution. Our unique method is to have our members distribute Bibles in the 44 approved placement areas which include schools, prisons, hotels and waiting rooms. Individuals, churches and schools can join as a Friend of Gideons and thus gain access to Scriptures.

It is neither. The Gideons International is an association which complements the work of Evangelical and Protestant churches. Our members come from various denominations, live all over the world and share a desire to see the lost come to Christ.
Yes! Each Bible placed in a hotel room has the potential of reaching up to 2 300 people in its estimated six-year life span. Research from the hotel industry tells us that approximately 25% of guests read the Bibles in their hotel rooms. Bibles are not only placed in hotel rooms, but also a wide range of accommodation facilities like guest houses, Airbnb’s and lodges.
Many people who have access to digital platforms or a Bible App, still prefer to have a hard copy of the Bible. In South Africa many people can’t afford to use the internet on a daily basis.
Research by the Bible Society of South Africa shows that approximately 20 million people do not own their own Bible.
